Ruskin College, Oxford is pleased to announce a Social Work Action Network (SWAN) event - 'The Crisis in Mental Health Services' - which will take place on Saturday 28th June 2014.

The crisis in mental health services has become so acute that even the government has had to acknowledge the scale of the problem. Welfare services, which service users and carers rely on are being drastically cut as a result of the politics of austerity and the government’s benefits ‘reforms’ are forcing more and more people into poverty. Meanwhile the gap between the richest and poorest in society is continuing to expand. Practitioners are forced to struggle with high caseloads, reduced resources and a target culture, which is underpinned by market ideology and privatisation.

"Building Alliance, Defending Services" - the Social Work Action Network Ireland 1st Annual Conference.

The theme of the conference will be building alliances in the struggle to defend services and challenge austerity measures.

The Social Work Action Network Ireland (SWAN Ireland) is a growing grassroots network of people who are concerned about the increase in structural inequalities in Irish society, the attacks on basic services and supports that the welfare state has traditionally provided people and the increasing privatisation of our once public services.

SWAN Ireland wants to build alliances with all social workers, social care workers, students, academics, family members, service users, welfare claimants, activists, trade unionists, advocacy workers and care workers, in order to fight for a just society that values people and solidarity at it’s core.

SWAN is pleased to hear this evening that the Palestine-UK Social Work Network is holding its second annual conference on 12th November this year in London. SWAN National Convenor, Michael Lavalette, spoke among others, at last year's event.

The conference is £15 waged and £5 for those who are unwaged. The event will be held at the Human Rights Action Centre, 17-25 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA (near Shoreditch Overground and Old Street tube).
