FROM JULY 2011
The Social Work Action Network (SWAN) welcomes today's announcement that the News of the World tabloid newspaper, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News International group, is to close.
The newspaper, like its sister paper the Sun, has attacked social workers repeatedly over the years.
The News of the World participated in the witch-hunt against social workers following the tragic death of Peter Connolly, 'Baby P'. In the wake of this, SWAN set up a petition to condemn this media tirade which was signed by social workers all over the country. SWAN also issued the short book 'Social Work after Baby P' to discuss the future for social work at that time.
